Job's Tears: Beads from Mother Nature
When I found out what Job's Tears were, I was visiting my family. On this particular day, I was sitting on my uncle's couch and we were talking about jewelry. He told me about a type of grass that has very hard seeds, which naturally have a hole. That's what makes them look like beads. As a child, he and the rest of his siblings, including my father, went looking for these seeds to collect them. They would make their own jewelry. We had to message my aunt in Suriname to find out what this type of grass is called: Job's Tears.
Job's Tears, also known as coix-lacryma-jobi or Job's Tears, originate from Southeast Asia. Due to their bead-like appearance, they have been used worldwide for centuries for making jewelry and decorative objects, food and medicine. Because of this, they have acquired a rich cultural significance.
Origin of the Name
The seed takes its name from the Biblical figure Job, the symbol stands for suffering and patience. Job's tears are therefore a metaphor for the sorrow he endured.
The Cultural Meaning of Job's Tears in Jewelry
In many traditions, Job's tears are known for their protective powers. For spiritual reasons, they are often used as amulets against negative energy and as aids in meditation. Because the name 'Job's Tears' is derived from a biblical figure, you'll find many rosaries made with these seeds. In Suriname, job's tears are especially valued for their natural beauty and deep connection with nature. They are often incorporated into jewelry that tells personal stories and traditions.
