The History and Origin of Amethyst

Amethyst was primarily mined in Russia until the 19th century. Today it can be found all over the world, with Brazil being the biggest supplier.

The name originates from the Greek word “amethystos”, meaning “not intoxicated.” Ancient Greeks and Romans believed it could protect against drunkenness and overindulgence. Throughout history, it has been associated with royalty, worn as a symbol of power, and used in religious artifacts.

Mythology

The myth of Amethyste was written by a French poet named Rémy Belleau (1528-1577). In this myth, Dionysos (Bacchus for the Romans) fell in love with a maiden named Amethystos. However, Amethystos had no interest and asked the goddess Artemis (also known as Diana), for help. To protect her and her chastity, the goddess transformed Amethystos into a white crystal. Dionysos then poured his wine over the crystals out of frustration, leaving the crystal purple for eternity.

Crystal Formation

Amethyst is belongs to the quartz family and gets its color from iron and radiaton. The purple becomes darker when irons levels are higher and radiation is increased. This crystal usually forms in geodes, which is a hollow rock formed by vulcanic gas bubbles.
